Cross over the bridge from Kalmar in Sweden and you reach the island of Öland. So close, yet so far from the maddening crowds. Quaint villages, windmills and a barn converted into a hotel. It is everything you need to forget your worries and relax.

• What to Do: Visit the Borgholm Castle, walk down to Halltorps Hage - a small forest reserve with birds, flowers and the sea to keep you company.

It was Chef Anthony Bourdain that led us to Motovun and the truffled treats the family run tavern - Konoba Mondo. A view to die for, some of the best food we'd ever had in Europe, heavenly wines and a town that retained it's heritage and peace while catering to wanderlusts like us.

• What to Do: Wine and dine, walk around the castle, taste and buy your wines! No wonder Motovun is known as the heart of the istrian wine region.

• Local Cuisine: Fresh truffles in your pasta, great steaks and excellent wine to wash it all down.

  
  

Exploring Asia’s Hidden Treasures

The Thatched village (Kayabuki no Sato) in Miyama, Japan

Most tourists rush past this quaint thatched village, opting for day tours from Kyoto. Did you know you could stay at a guest house in the village? The crowds leave at 5PM and then, it is just you, a few villagers and peace. The stay packages include breakfast and we were taken to the only local restaurant for a sumptuous Japanese dinner.

• What to Do: Nothing. Walk around the village, marvel at how the Government has maintained the village and revel in Japanese hospitality.
